A Solo Advisor in Survival Mode
Sonny and Cher. The Beatles. Simon & Garfunkel. When partnerships break up, they can be devastating. Prior to joining Advisors Excel in 2016, Cory C. had gone through a bad partnership breakup and his business was essentially in survival mode. Cory was working around the clock just to keep everything afloat, missing out on precious time with his family while not seeing the kind of returns that would allow for healthy and sustainable business growth. Something had to change.
“I was a good speaker and could talk to people,” Cory said of his early days as a solo advisor. “I wasn’t really running things like a business. We were running by the seat of our pants.”
Cory’s situation was not uncommon. Many advisors are great at forming connections with clients and prospects, but establishing and growing a successful business requires an entirely different skillset and way of thinking. “When I first came on board with AE, I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know,” says Cory. “I never knew about the proper way to market. I didn’t understand about sales systems and processes. I didn’t understand that the marketing machine made such a difference to growing our business.”
Cory had only been with Advisors Excel a short time when he attended his first workshop: Ignite with Rob R., one of our top advisors. For Cory, the event was “mind blowing.” Rob delivered a detailed breakdown of his own sales process, the Sound Fiscal House, and taught Cory how to implement it in his own practice—which he immediately did. He also devoted himself to studying and understanding his business numbers, working with Track That Advisor, tracking his ROI from seminars, and more.
“I’m a student of the game,” Cory says. “When I see something, I can emulate it really quick. I started putting things into place and it made a big difference. Within that first year, we started growing and we haven’t stopped.”
From 2016-2021, Cory’s business averaged 35% growth rate each year as a result of the processes he was able to put in place. In 2023 he saw 45% growth and is on track to do even more in 2024. Cory credits the community he found at Advisors Excel as crucial to his success.
“Being a solopreneur there was no one in my office to bounce ideas off, no one to ask questions about how to do certain things. You just kind of learn on your own,” says Cory. “The thing that really helped jumpstart our business was having the consistent ability to have a mentorship and going to events like The Journey and the breakout sessions. We didn’t know what we didn’t know. Having the ability to learn from other advisors who have done it right creates an environment where you can share ideas and apply them to your own office—that was big for me.”

As a ‘student of the game,’ Cory has transformed his business from a struggling one-man-show to a thriving holistic practice and lifestyle business. After so many years of working himself into the ground, missing out on important moments with his family, Cory now has the luxury of taking things at his own pace.
“I only see clients three or four days a week,” he says. “I have staff and team building meetings on Mondays and Fridays out of the office. I really enjoy the way our practice runs now. It’s given me more freedom and more time to spend with my family and do things that are important to me as opposed to just chasing work.”
